Coach Spotlight: Adi Soelistyo and the Culture of Training Together

Some coaches start with a stopwatch. Adi Soelistyo started with a community.
In 2015 he joined IndoRunners, one of the first running communities in Indonesia. The goal back then was bigger than any single race. He and his fellow runners wanted to spread what they called the “training culture virus,” the idea that running is about consistency, discipline, and steady self-growth, not just what happens on race day. A decade later, that same idea still drives everything he does.
Today Adi is a certified running coach and the founder of BBS, short for Belajar Bersama Soelistyo, which means “learning together with Soelistyo.” He coaches individual athletes alongside some of Indonesia’s most recognizable corporate and community running squads. As one of the first Indonesian coaches on EndoGusto, his story is a useful window into how structured, data-informed coaching is taking root across the region.
From Community Member to Coach
He did not set out to become a coach. The role found him.
By 2017 he was leading the IndoRunners training program, and that is when something clicked. Passion was getting people to the start line, but it was not enough to carry them through a full season safely. As he puts it:
“Passion alone is not enough. Coaching also requires structured knowledge and continuous learning.”
So he went looking for the knowledge. He earned his UESCA running coach certification in 2020, added a Level I conditioning coaching certification through the Indonesia Conditioning Coaches Association in 2023, and completed his World Athletics CECS Level I certification in 2024. Three credentials, built deliberately on top of years of hands-on community coaching.
The shift from enthusiast to coach felt natural. He found real satisfaction in helping newer runners prepare properly and enjoy the process without getting hurt. What began as sharing experience with friends grew into something he genuinely loved, namely guiding people through their own running journeys and watching them find their potential.
A Philosophy Built on Structure and Humanity
Ask Adi about his coaching philosophy and two words show up together: structured and human.
His programs rest on measurable training, sport science, and athlete data. At the same time, he insists that training has to stay sustainable. In his words:
“Every athlete has different goals, backgrounds, responsibilities, and limitations, so the program should adapt to the athlete, not the other way around.”
That principle shapes how he designs a plan. Before writing a single workout, he wants to understand the athlete as a whole person. Fitness background, training history, lifestyle, work schedule, and recovery capacity all come first. Only then does he build a progressive program that balances performance goals against long-term durability.
He is also blunt about the trap most runners fall into. They chase hard sessions and treat recovery as optional. Many athletes focus only on the difficult workouts, however, the adaptation actually happens during recovery. For this reason he treats intensity, volume, and recovery as a single system rather than three separate dials.
Injury prevention, similarly, is not a separate program for him. It is baked into the week. Strength work and recovery strategies sit inside the regular structure, because durability is what makes long-term progress possible. As he sees it, consistency is far more valuable than short-term gains that end in injury.
Building BBS, One Honest Result at a Time

The business grew the same way the coaching did, slowly and through trust.
BBS started from a simple approach: help people sincerely and let the results speak. Adi began by coaching close friends and colleagues, asking only for honest feedback and a testimonial at the end of each program. Word spread. Trust compounded. Alongside the coaching, he kept refining a clear methodology and kept studying, building an identity around that founding idea of learning together.
The client roster tells the rest of the story. Over the years, BBS has supported a variety of corporate running clubs, community-based running groups, and individual athletes across Indonesia. For a practice that started with a handful of friends, that is a serious vote of confidence from Indonesia’s corporate running scene.
Where Technology Fits
Adi is clear-eyed about what technology does and does not do.
It does not replace coaching judgment. Instead, it makes that judgment sharper and faster. He uses EndoGusto to monitor athlete progress through data, compare historical trends, and make better-informed training decisions. It also cuts the friction in coach-athlete communication. One feature his athletes especially appreciate is automatic sync to their sports watches, so the next session is right there on their wrist.
He has been part of the EndoGusto ecosystem since 2024, back when the platform was still called Science Training. In his words:
“Through athlete data, we can better understand individual potential and training capacity, allowing us to build programs that are effective without unnecessarily overloading the athlete.”
For a coach whose whole philosophy rests on structure and sustainability, that is exactly the part that matters.
What Keeps Him Coaching

For Adi, the reward is watching the impossible become real.
He describes the most fulfilling part of the job as seeing athletes reach goals they once thought were out of range. He talks about athletes trusting the process, staying consistent, and finally getting to feel the results of their own work. Every success story, he says, feels personal.
The motivation renews itself with every athlete. One runner wants a first marathon. Another is chasing a Six Star medal. Another simply wants to be healthier and more confident. Different dreams, in other words, but the same job: support the journey and watch the person grow.
His ambition reaches past individual results, too. He wants to help build a healthier, better-educated running community, one that understands progress as patient, sustainable growth rather than a string of one-hit wonders.
Coaching the Individual, Not the Average
No two athletes get the same plan.
Personalization is the backbone of how BBS works. Adi adapts schedules, intensity, and workout types to each runner’s fitness level, goals, background, and daily responsibilities. Before any program begins, he runs an initial screening and a real conversation to understand what the athlete actually needs and where their limits are. It is the practical expression of his core belief, that the program adapts to the athlete.
Still Spreading the Virus
A decade after catching the “training culture virus,” Adi is still spreading it, now with certifications, data, and a roster of squads behind him. The tools have changed. The mission has not. He is still working to help more people run well, stay healthy, and grow, together.

Maka ia pun mencari ilmunya.
Daftar kliennya menceritakan sisanya.
Melatih Individu, Bukan Rata-Rata
